PARTY DEMOCRACY

CHANGES MADE TO PARTY POLICY-MAKING AT CONFERENCE 2007

Conference 2007 voted overwhelmingly to overhaul the party’s policy-making process. The changes were approved my massive majorities by all parts of the Labour movement - constituencies, unions and affiliated groups.

We welcome these changes, as they include many things that we have been calling for and lobbying for over the past few years. As with all proposals, their effectiveness will only be seen properly in the detail and over time, but we are all committed to work hard to make them work.

In particular, we welcome the changes that will make it easier for us to do our jobs as your representatives:

  • Greater access to lists of members
  • Making it easier for us to consult with members and report back to members
  • More regional events
  • Every member to be invited to events
  • The use of new technology to have on-going debates, rather than just set-piece meetings
  • The policy commissions to be much more open in their work, reporting regularly to the whole party

As a team, we have done all we can to make these changes happen before the latest proposals. We have regular newsletters and have undertaken surveys of all members on topical issues. We were the first (and still the only) regional team with a website. We have pushed for newsletters from the commissions. We have helped local parties and groups of parties to hold events.
