The Coalition – Damaging education

The Coalition – education is not safe with them

CUTTING EDUCATION BUDGETS

The June 2010 budget announced 25% education cuts over the next four year.

10,000 student places scrapped, as well as £82m of university funding

REDUCING CHANCES

The Coalition have tripled university tuition fees – making it more difficult for young people to go to university.

Nick Clegg and his Lib Dem MPs signed a pledge that they would oppose tuition fees, and then most of them voted for this – so you can’t trust a Lib Dem promise.

Further Education colleges, which provide much of our skills training, will have 25% cut in budgets by 2014-15, and students will have to pay more.
FREE SCHOOLS – PRIVATISING EDUCATION EVEN THOUGH THEY DON’T WORK!

Michael Gove said he doesn’t mind if businesses running schools do it for profit. “I don’t have an ideological objection to businesses being involved.”

Dr Susanne Wilbury of the Institute of Education in London studied free schools. The Guardian reported that her study found:

  • A small increase in results at age 15, but no improvement in results aged18
  • An increase in segregation – most schools were in rich urban areas
  • Local authorities have to pay for surplus community school places and planning admissions becomes complex and expensive

So results were no better, but places more expensive.

Rules for free schools will allow unqualified teachers, and schools could open in pubs and shops.
